Overview
Sound, a public-benefit exhibition presented by WU SPACE, opened on the afternoon of June 5, 2019. The exhibition showcases over twenty woodcut prints created by students from the Tiexi District School for the Deaf in Shenyang. Within a silent world, these students use carving knives to articulate their innermost thoughts between stark lines of black and white. Following the opening, lead instructor Li Guixin joined eight guest speakers at WU SPACE for an insightful and meaningful panel discussion.
Content
As a public-benefit project, WU SPACE sought to present the children’s creations from the most authentic perspective, documenting the creative process from initial concept to final execution. The purity of these works shares a subtle connection with the unique bodily experience of deaf-mute individuals—reflecting a distinct mode of perception through which they contemplate the world, as well as a profound sincerity in their artistic process. Through the unique power of woodcut printmaking, these children have projected a voice entirely their own.
