Content
Conflating prediction and actualisation, weather lore and techno-agency, divination and doom, Weather Casting is a moving-image work that explores shifts from forecasting the weather to 'casting' it into reality. Set within a future global tropics due to global warming, the work speculates on the supposed 'normalcy' of humanity's future geoengineering prowess to achieve mastery over the weather. The work weaves a world-building narrative of a fictional climate future, centred on a monsoon system that brings not only moisture from the Indian Ocean into and across Southeast and East Asia, but with it, millennia of myths and religions.
As global warming accelerates, we enter a future of global tropics. Heat is no longer naturally random; it can be controlled and casted. 'Weather Casting' explores the shift from "forecasting" the weather to "casting" it into reality. The Asia-Pacific monsoon system, spanning Southeast to East Asia, is no longer a natural phenomenon but a man-made domain of geoengineering.
